Title: Deconstructing INFATUATION
Author: Merce Cardus
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Form: Kindle edition
Publisher: CreateSpace

Book Description ~ Deconstructing INFATUATION
Sometimes, whether you're single or with a significant one,
somebody appears in your life unexpectedly.
We feel the need to know who this person is,
the need to know exactly who this person is.

A story may offer different interpretations, even with several irreconcilable and contradictory meanings. As in Francesca da Rimini and Paolo Malatesta's story in Dante's Divine Comedy, this story is not about unfaithfulness either. This story is about infatuation: what burns inside of oneself when we let ourselves fall madly for someone.

Deconstructing INFATUATION Book Review

“A short but fantastic read. The book is passionate and direct to the point. I love that the author was able to create a story that will haunt its readers (in a good way), which may lead to us (readers) actually learning something really important about life – and love.” – Ara @ My Book and My Coffee

This book, Deconstructing INFATUATION, was given to me by Merce Cardus, the author, in exchange for an honest review.

This short story offers so much, which is really ironic. I liked the plot; for me, it was realistic, certainly something that could easily be experienced by anyone. It is fast paced, indeed, but the life – and ‘love’ – lessons I think the author wanted to let her readers realize were strategically implied and successfully included in the book.

Deconstructing INFATUATION tells the story about a part of Helen’s life that I think she will never ever forget. Actually, I really believe she won’t. An almost month-long experience that will, for once, let her actually relax… and know what she really wants. And shake her emotionally, and, ‘physically’. :D I won’t give out more information (At least, I'll try not to) as I feel that you will enjoy this book more if you will only have a few ideas of what’s in store for you.

Although just from reading the first chapter, you will already have an idea on what is about to happen, or how likely the story will turn out. For me, I was still surprised as to how the ending went down. It was almost heart-breaking but still, I do love the ending. You’ll probably question me after reading the book yourself. But I think the ending is just  fitting. At least, that's how it was written. You’ll know what I mean.

The characters: The book’s characters are all relatable, especially Helen’s. Helen is the book’s protagonist. I like her and I don’t care if she made a mistake; the truth is, we can all learn from her mistake. She has a boyfriend named Mark who travels a lot. Her roommate, Marleen, is about to get married and has to sublet her room for a month. This is where Tiziano comes in… In this book, it will seem that you’ll need more information about the characters especially Tiziano’s. But that’s not how the book was written and intended. The author wanted to emphasize the life lesson you are about to discover.

I think that what happened to Helen, her experiences, her spontaneous change of heart, her situation, are all very close to our reality. This is one of the reasons why I love this book. It's fiction but it definitely and conveniently connects you to real life scenarios. Helen was obviously infatuated, although I don't think she knows that at first or at all. She’s ready to give up everything which is really scary because while I was reading the book, there’s no telling if it will be reciprocated. In real life, some of us may have been in the similar situation where we think we love a person but realize in the end that “Oh bugger, It’s not real.” Or perhaps, we love a person, and we assume that they will love us back – the infamous unrequited love (I’ve mastered this one. HAHA). Or maybe a situation where we are in a relationship, and then someone interesting and appealing comes along and rocks our world, makes us smile and feel that funny sensation whenever we fall in love, and almost immediately, we realize things that we didn’t know we needed, feelings that we didn't know existed, and suddenly, we have that urge to jump and change everything – and soon. All too familiar? I would say so. Oh dear, let me tell you, this book will really make you think and assess maybe not everything in your life, but enough (to actually make you wonder).

“To love is to risk”. Is it really worth ‘loving’ someone when you know that it presents risks in almost every aspect? For Helen, it didn’t matter at the time. She knows what she wants (or at least what she thinks she wants), and is eager to pursue it – no matter what.

I say, live and let live. ;) I mean, honestly, when you’re in the ‘fallen-in-love’ mode (or at least, when you think you are), you rarely think things through. Can you really blame Helen? Like what Meg (from Hercules) said, “People do crazy things… when they’re in love”. So true.

I should tell you now that I was once (or twice) a hopeless romantic and that I’ve been there … and done a lot of risking here and there. I’ve learned a lot, which is all I can say. Helen’s lucky to have realized better in the end.

So, my dear readers, viewers and friends, if you’d like to read a novel that is full of passion and love and life realizations then go ahead, please read Deconstructing INFATUATION by Merce Cardus. You’ll certainly love it. I did.

Accepted Books / eBooks for Review:

The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap by Paulette Mahurin

The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap by Paulette Mahurin kindle edition
A women's Brokeback Mountain. The year was filled with memorable historical events: the Dreyfus Affair divided France; Booker T. Washington gave his Atlanta address; the United States expanded the effects of the Monroe Doctrine in South America; and Oscar Wilde was tried and convicted for gross indecency under Britain's recently passed law that made sex between males a criminal offense. When news of Wilde's conviction went out over telegraphs worldwide, it threw a small Nevada town into chaos. This is the story of what happened when the lives of its citizens were impacted the Wilde news. It is a chronicle of hatred and prejudice with all its unintended and devastating consequences, and how love and friendship bring strength and healing.

Dead Run by Erica Spindler

The Book Reviewer is IN: Dead Run by Erica Spindler

"I'm in trouble, Liz. I've uncovered something.…They're watching.…"

That panicked message on her answering machine is the last time Liz Ames hears from her sister Rachel, pastor of Paradise Christian Church in Key West, Florida.

Compelled to uncover the truth about her sister's disappearance, she heads to Key West. Within hours of her arrival a successful banker jumps to his death. Then a teenage girl whom Rachel was counseling is found brutally murdered. The ritualistic style of the killing is hauntingly similar to that used by the notorious "New Testament" serial killer—now on death row.

Could the teen's murder be related to Rachel's disappearance? Is a copycat killer at work? And why do the police refuse to help?

For answers, Liz turns to Rick Wells, a former Miami cop who worked the fringes of the "New Testament" investigation. Together they peel away layers of deception to reveal a terrifying adversary—and the unspeakable evil at the heart of this island paradise.

Title: The Super Spud Trilogy
Author: Michael Diack
Genre: Humour
Form: PDF copy
Publisher: Pen Press

Book Description ~ The Super Spud Trilogy
Genetic engineering has accomplished many things, one of which has been to create the Super Spud! The humble potato elevated to new heights, creating the most flavoursome crisps ever known to humankind! But that's not all - A magical transformation occurs to all Super Spud crisps not eaten before their use-by date. They take on a life of their own. And so long as they remain undetected by humans, they enjoy life in their own Super Spud cities, take part in major Super Spud sporting events and even start the odd Super Spud war or two. Join Colin, Cougar, Hannibal Vector, Generals Rock, Jock and Strap and all the others in their rollicking adventures. You'll never look at a packet of crisps in the same way again! Fun, quirky and totally original.

The personality of the Super Spud is determined by their flavour. Tuna flavours, enriched with omega-3 fish oils are very smart, while steak and spinach flavours are incredibly strong due to their high iron content. The story is fast and composed of a series of non-stop adventures from one chapter to the next, encompassing locations including Egypt, Mexico, UK, Italy and the North Pole!

The Super Spud Trilogy Book Review

“Expect the unexpected world way beyond your imagination. The author’s creativity and vivid imagination are incredible! Great read!” – Ara at My Book and My Coffee

This is a PDF copy given to me by the author, Michael Diack, in exchange for an honest review. This is, indeed, a trilogy. Three amazing, almost heart-breaking (I’ll try to explain later), spontaneous (Yes, I’ll say that), and unbelievable adventures.

This is very different as, I should say now, nothing in this book is really ordinary. In this book, you’ll find stories of the lives of crisps (chips) that once were spuds (potatoes). You’d think that it’s a normal thing, spuds to crisps. But noooo. These spuds were turned into “Super Spuds” – the name of the packet of crisps that are available for humans to consume. Apparently, humans got bored of the normal taste of crisps that the company making the crisps had to create ‘genetically engineered’ crisps so that they will taste even better – resulting to different tasty flavors. Well, aside from these tasty flavors, they can now have a life of their own undetected by humans. And they (the Super Spuds) can’t afford to be detected by humans so they have rules. Unfortunately, I really can’t tell you what the rules are. It's more fun if you find them out for yourself

First of all, the trilogy doesn’t really focus on one main character or protagonist. The  story, since it is a trilogy, is divided into three books (overall total of 262 pages) set to tell the tales of Colin, Cougar, and King Martin respectively.

“The word “shotgun” will have a slightly different meaning to you. I tell you, you will be laughing and really hard.”

The adventures: I feel that Colin’s adventure is too short. I don’t want to tell you why it was a short adventure though, sorry! ;) Cougar is already in the first book, so you’ll know him already. Cougar’s adventures are so full of excitement which includes the mention of “Catapults’R’Us” – go figure! Funny, scary, life-threatening, and well, really full of scenes that are unbelievably out of my imagination - including a packet of crisps singing… What? Yup, I can hear you saying that, too. ;)

Aside from that, this book is also full of all-too-familiar references.

You’ll also be reminded that burping in front of other people and looking proud about it should always be a no-no. ;) In this book, it can be very deadly!

Almost heart-breaking. As I’ve mentioned before, these crisps are definitely alive in this book. So, this includes them ‘falling-in-love’… But then, they can possibly die easily. So a love-story in the making can possibly (I'm not saying it will or will not. Hah!) end tragically. You’ll know what I mean.

Oh, yes, I should let you know now that the author did a very good job in creating a world combining our (human's) fantasy and reality. That is a hard thing to accomplish, I would think. But he did a very good job at it.

Please read the book first, and then decide from there if you would let your children read it. For me, I wouldn’t let my kid read this yet (of course, he's only two. :D). There are parts here that are overly tragic, even for a spud. And I should mention now (I guess, this is a bit of a spoiler), there are some humans who died, and the way they died, I think, are not suitable for kids to read.

So my dear friends, viewers, and readers, if you love a good humour novel with imaginative plots and characters that will surely crack you up, then you have to read Michael Diack’s The Super Spud Trilogy. You’ll actually get hungry and end up looking for chips to eat (guilty). Never mind if the certain packet was alive before you ate it ;)

The Super Spud Trilogy by Michael Diack is available in Paperback and Kindle edition.

Michael Diack is currently working as a field geophysicist in Oman. His novel was released 21st April 2012. You can visit his blog if you want to know more about the world of the Super Spud. All the blogs there will be about Super Spuds and will make you more familiar with their world.

Celebration! Yes, I’ve been tagged twice with this award. This one is a bit different (it only has 5 questions, 5 tags, etc). Thanks so much to Laura Besley at Living, Loving and Writing for the nomination. I’m definitely grateful.

As you probably know, Liebster Blog Award is being given to bloggers with fewer than 200 followers. ‘Liebster’ is actually a German word; it means ‘dearest’, ‘sweetheart’, or ‘beloved’. Now, I have to admit; this is one great award!

So… what are the rules this time?

Pretty easy, actually.

1. Post five (5) facts about yourself
2. Answer 5 questions the tagger has asked
3. Tag 5 other bloggers by linking them to your post. After publishing, let these bloggers know that you have tagged them. You can either contact them via their email addresses or just comment on one of their posts.
4. Think of five questions for the bloggers you've tagged. Post the questions so the bloggers you've tagged can answer them when they publish their own Liebster blog award posts.
5. No tags back.

Here we go!

Five Facts about me:

1. I love to eat pasta (Spaghetti Carbonara - absolute fave)
2. Lately, I’ve been drinking a lot of iced / sweet tea (no more soda). I believe this book inspired me to do so.
3. I don’t always shop for clothes. As in.
4. I always cry whenever I watch the movie “The Lakehouse”.
5. I always want (and I try) to organize my schedule. And I can, you know. But somehow, at the end of the week, it always ends up as just a schedule – not entirely followed. :(

Questions from Laura Besley

1. Have you always considered yourself a creative person?
I think, yes. To a point. ;)

2. Who has been an inspiration to you in your life and work?
Hmmm. Well, at the moment, my inspiration in life and work is my family (hubby and son), and I think they will be my inspiration for the rest of my life. But before I met my husband, it changed every now and then. I mean, there was a time that my inspiration in life and work was ‘Lorelai Gilmore’ (Lauren Graham) from comedy-drama series, Gilmore Girls. I know it’s a bit unusual, where I get my inspiration, but I have my reasons. ;)

3. Name 3 things you'd like to achieve in life.
One: I want to be a successful book blogger and reviewer.
Two: I want to have financial freedom. It would really be nice.
Three: I want to be Wonder Woman. (Is it too much to ask? LOL)

4. If you could travel anywhere in the world (no money, time, visa restraints), where would you go?
Paris and Germany.

5. Do you think the world of art will drastically change in the next 50 years?
Yes. In so many ways, yes. But of course, there will be some, only a few, areas that will remain the same.

The five lovely bloggers I’m nominating for this award

1. Jenny and Nick – A Bookish Co-Op
2. Karen – Cheerful Book Reviews
3. Garima – One to Five Stars
4. Lily - Incurable Romantic
5. Sarah - Sarah's Book Nook

My five questions:

1. Books or movies?
2. Did you always want to be a book blogger / reviewer?
3. Where do you usually read books?
4. Do you have a favorite snack while reading a book?
5. Coffee, Tea, Milk, Iced Tea, or Hot chocolate?

Again, thanks to Laura ;) And to the five lovely bloggers that I've tagged, Congratulations! Have fun!

Murder & Mayhem In Goose Pimple Junction ~ Book Review

“Well, gracious me! This book made my week! Excellent plot. This is a murder mystery (with romance and humor) I wouldn’t mind reading over and over again. It’s that good!” – Ara of My Book and My Coffee

“If things get any better, I may have to hire someone to help me enjoy it.” ;)

This is an advance copy given by the author to me in exchange for an honest review. Well, I’m so happy to know that this is just the first book in Goose Pimple Junction mysteries. This first book is just so grand, it makes me want to know the other mysteries and mayhem that are about to surface in Goose Pimple Junction ;)

Basically, the book is about the seventy-five-year-old unsolved murder. I was actually curious as to how they would solve such a thing. How would they know who dunnit? The killer or ‘perp’ is probably dead by now, or would be dead any day now. How can Tess  (the protagonist in this book) solve the murder? Or is it even solvable? And will it still matter? How will we know the details from 1935? Anyway, these were the questions that went around my mind while preparing to read the novel. I was really excited and curious to see how it will all be presented.

And boy, I was not disappointed – not one bit, not one tee-nincey bit. ;)

As you know, I really can’t reveal anything here. I would love to as I want to share how good the book is, but I’ll leave it for your curious nose to find out! So, let’s talk about the different time settings.  I'll call it that, yes.  The author did a really good job in presenting two sets of time, the one from the 1930s and the present time (which is 2010 in the book). I was never ever confused on what’s going on, and what ‘time’ it happened. You’ll know what I mean. The author made sure that her readers are aware about the 1935 happenings, how it is and will be significant to the present time scenario, and how it will connect to the chapter they are at. It’s absolutely captivating. I am pointing this out as I’ve read some books before (way before I started blogging and reviewing) that tried to encompass different time settings in their book, but failed to do so, in my opinion, of course.

The southern humor. Oh goodness me, this book is full of that. It definitely made me laugh, not just once, but a lot of times. Oh, the punch lines. Yes, I’ll call them punch lines coz they are so funny. Let me share my scenario: I am reading a murder mystery novel in PDF form, so I am in front of my computer. But you’ll see me laughing my-you-know-what off. You see where I am going with this? I’m basically laughing, alone, in front of my computer. Weird? My two-year-old son just looks at me, and laughs as well. My smile is that contagious to him, I think. That or he is laughing at me for being weird at the time.

Seriously, there were a lot of times, while reading this book, that I found myself scared the first minute then laughing hard the next. And in some chapters, I was laughing then blushing as I find Tess and Jackson (love interest) to be soooo right for each other. You gotta love a book that can do these to you. Plus, I love, love a good mystery. So this book is definitely one of my favorites now.

About the mystery. Solving a seventy-five-year-old murder is not a piece of cake.  And you’d think that no one will really care if someone is about to look into it, and try to solve it.  Well, it’s going to be a bumpy ride for Tess.  That’s all I can say.

When you’re reading mystery novel, you can’t help it but build your own conclusion even before the book reveals who really dunnit. I did just that, twice, and was wrong both times. Hah!  So when you’re reading this book, you’ll think that you know who did it, but you may have to think again. Unless, of course, you had the gut feeling that it was [insert the crude’s name here]. Oh dear, can’t spill it out, really. ;)

So my dear viewers, readers and friends, if you love a good mystery novel with a dash of romance and a lot of humour (southern humor, that is), then I strongly recommend that you read this book. If you are not familiar with the ‘Southern-speak’ like me (I have heard a lot before though), you may find some of the terms / sentences a bit confusing at first, but that’s alright. As you read along, you'll find them easy to ‘decipher’. You’ll know what I mean. ;)

Rating: (My first ever 5-star rating!)

Welcome to “The Book Reviewer Is IN”.

The Book Reviewer is IN - My Book and My Coffee

So, what is this feature? Basically, I wanted to feature or showcase books / eBooks / novels that I have ACCEPTED for review, and the ones that I have lined-up to read from my TBR (to-be-read) pile. And I wanted to create my own, so here it is. This is somehow inspired by Books, Biscuits, and Tea’s “Showcase Sunday”. The blog owner's name is Vicky, and she’s really nice.

As I have mentioned above, some of the books below are the ones that I have accepted for review. I will start to read the first one this week, and the others will be reviewed in the next week, and so on. I’ll be doing this whenever I’ve accepted books for review, and I’ll be throwing in a book or two from my own TBR pile (the books that I own).

So, here are the books that I am really looking forward to reading.

Accepted Books / eBooks for Review:

When Tess Tremaine starts a new life in the colorful town of Goose Pimple Junction, curiosity leads her to look into a seventy-five-year-old murder. Suddenly she’s learning the foreign language of southern speak, resisting her attraction to local celebrity Jackson Wright, and dealing with more mayhem than she can handle.

A bank robbery, murder, and family tragedy from the 1930s are pieces of the mystery that Tess attempts to solve. As she gets close to the truth, she encounters danger, mystery, a lot of southern charm, and a new temptation for which she’s not sure she’s ready.

Deconstructing INFATUATION by Merce Cardus (Contemporary Romance)

Deconstructing INFATUATION by Merce Cardus kindle ebook edition

Sometimes, whether you're single or with a significant one,
somebody appears in your life unexpectedly.
We feel the need to know who this person is,
the need to know exactly who this person is.

A story may offer different interpretations, even with several irreconcilable and contradictory meanings. As in Francesca da Rimini and Paolo Malatesta's story in Dante's Divine Comedy, this story is not about unfaithfulness either. This story is about infatuation: what burns inside of oneself when we let ourselves fall madly for someone.

Murder by Manicure (A Bad Hair Day Mystery) by Nancy J. Cohen (Hardcover)

Book description from Goodreads
When beauty salon owner Marla Shore joins the Perfect Fit Sports Club to try to shed a few excess holiday pounds, she never dreams that slimming down would mean running into a deadly case of foul play.

Marla's in the middle of her body fat analysis, when the blood-curdling screams of a hysterical patron send her charging to the "wet area." It seems that after ingesting a gelatin capsule to strengthen her nails, Jolene Myers slipped into a whirlpool -- and drowned beneath the swirling waters. Homicide Detective Dalton Vail is convinced Jolene's death was no accident -- and Marla intends to join forces with him and give her deductive skills a workout.

Marla quickly discovers that there's no shortage of suspects. Any one of a number of people at the toney sports club could have swapped Jolene's nail-strengthening capsule for a poisonous gelcap -- from a philandering pharmacist and a corrupt city councilman, to a vocal animal rights activist, a Dancercise instructor, and Jolene's massage therapist.

With a second corpse on her manicured hands, Marla had better nail the killer quick, before the next buff body on its way to the morgue is hers.

Momnesia by Lori Verni-Fogarsi

Can this suburban mom find balance between her "momminess" and her "sexiness?"

She's smart, pretty, and runs her own business. So then why does she feel so dead inside? Between work, two kids, and a husband who finds her about as exciting as furniture shopping, this is the story of a (formerly-exciting but now way-too-typical) suburban mom who diagnoses herself with Momnesia and sets about finessing a new version of her old vivaciousness:

Momnesia (mahm-nee-zhuh) -noun-

Loss of the memory of who you used to be. Caused by pregnancy, play dates, and trying to keep the house cleaner than the Joneses.

She finds some adventure pursuing her own interests, and does make some new friends (including the battery operated variety), but she still feels like nothing more than a caretaker.

In between dealing with her husband's manic-depressive behavior, drama with her friends, and some naughty Internet escapades, she questions, "Is it that I haven't been myself? Or is it that I am being myself but just different than I used to be?"

It isn't until she tosses the Invisible Rule Book altogether, that she discovers life--and love--have more to offer than she ever imagined!

I'm so stoked! I am really excited about these books / eBooks. I will be reading them real soon. ;)
