WW Giveaway: Manroot by Anne Steinberg
Manroot by Anne Steinberg
Fantasy, Romance

Book Description:

In the spring of 1939, Katherine Sheahan and her father, Jesse, are looking for work in the isolated tourist town of Castlewood. Jesse gets a job as handyman and Katherine as a maid at a small hotel. Jesse drinks and neglects his work and eventually disappears, abandoning his daughter. Frieda Broom, the hotel Manager, takes Katherine under her wing, and teaches her about ginseng, the manroot, and other secrets of the foothills. Katherine discovers that she is a natural healer and has the ability to communicate with spirits, a gift she inherited from her Navajo Indian mother.

Among the hotels regular clientele is Judge William Reardon. Escaping his sterile marriage, he becomes captivated by Katherine. As the pair bond over astrology and gardening, Katherine becomes convinced they belong together, despite him being much older than her and married. As they begin to fall in love, the violence of dark magic threatens to annihilate all Katherine knows and holds dear. Can their love survive?

Manroot is a potent tale of destiny, spiritualism and love, written in Anne Steinberg’s signature compelling style.
About the Author:

Anne Steinberg - author of Manroot
While living in England, Anne Steinberg’s first novel, Manroot was published by Headline Review in London. Manroot was heralded as an important first novel in 1994 and included in the Headline Review’s prestigious “Fiction without Frontiers,” a new wave of contemporary fiction that knows no limits. Eight modern storytellers were featured: Anne Steinberg, Margaret Atwood, Iain Banks, William Gibson, Peter Hoeg, Roddy Doyle, and E. Annie Proulx. It was an auspicious beginning to a long and varied career for Anne Steinberg, who went on to write several acclaimed novels, Every Town Needs A Russian Tea Room, the story of a wealthy socialite who falls in love with a penniless young Russian immigrant who is haunted by a bizarre shameful secret, The Cuckoos Gift, First Hands, and An Eye For An Ear. She is also coauthor of The Fence, written with her grandson Nicholas Reuel Tolkien, the great grandson of J.R.R. Tolkien. Nicholas is a filmmaker, director, and published poet. The Fence is a chilling story of a magnificent Gothic fence forged by a despicable blacksmith and infused with evil.

Anne was a partner in the world famous vintage clothing store, Steinberg & Tolkien, on Kings Road in Chelsea. After a successful run for over 20 years, the shop closed, and she returned to the US. Approaching her eighty-second birthday, she now writes, reads, and studies antiques, American Indian history, animal welfare, mythology, and folklore legends.

Hello lovelies! Amie Denman, author of The Gull Motel, is here today to share a guest post about her 'love affair' with Florida. I haven't been to Florida... yet, and it would be great to have her book on my ever-growing TBR so at least I have an idea. Plus, this sounds like a wonderful story. Check. Added. :)

Amie is on currently on blog tour to support her newly released novel, The Gull Motel, a sweet contemporary romance. Let's read and share this guest post ... and, oh, don't forget to enter the giveaway after reading! :)

Guest Post @ My Book and My Coffee - The Gull Motel Tour

*****
When Savvy Thorpe rolls into The Gull Motel on the Gulf Coast of Florida, she expects to stay a few weeks. Sure she loves her aunt and uncle’s aging 1950s beach motel, but she has no idea she’s in for much more than a beach vacation.

I totally wish this would happen to me.

However, I live in Ohio. Ohio, for Pete’s sake. For years, I’ve been tempted to make Florida my permanent home. What am I waiting for? I’m usually terrible at resisting temptation. I’ve told myself all the usual lies people in the North tell. I just love the change of seasons. I’d miss cool autumn days. Pumpkins. Frost. Snow. Shoveling snow. Falling on my ass in the iced-over mall parking lot. Scraping ice off my windshield. Breaking the key off in the door lock because it is That. Damn. Cold.

Who am I kidding? I should end my long-distance love affair with Florida and move a thousand miles south. I could shack up with Florida without even blushing.

I know where this all started. I grew up in a small Ohio town filled with old people. You know where they went in the winter. The old man next door gave sage advice about travelling: take half the clothes and twice the money. His wife always brought the same sensuous gift to me and my sisters. Orange perfume in a little container shaped like an orange. It was wonderful. I’d hide it and hoard it in my room. I’d open it carefully and smell it. A guilty pleasure for a 7-year-old.

When I wrote The Gull Motel and Savvy’s marketing ideas about a return to “Old Florida” with roadside stands, polka-dot bikinis, Alligator kitsch, and orange blossom perfume, I was thinking about the yearly gift from the elderly couple next door. I wonder if I could find an old souvenir stand somewhere in The Sunshine State that still sells it.

*****

Thanks for sharing the post, Amie! Again, this sounds like a wonderful story.... My love for contemporary romance. :)

Savvy Thorpe needs a vacation. Finally finished with college, she heads to her favorite shabby motel on Florida’s Gulf Coast where her aunt and uncle always save her room twenty-four. She quickly finds out, though, that The Gull Motel is not just her home away from home. It’s hers to manage while her aunt and uncle take an extended trip.

Skip McComber, The Gull’s former maintenance man, has been working on Savvy’s nuts and bolts for years. Now the new owner of the bar next door, his mission is to renovate a pirate bar while being a walking temptation for the girl he can’t get off his mind.

For Savvy, keeping her cool running a motel in Florida heat is one thing, but navigating the steamy waters of a former fling takes a whole other kind of savvy. In addition to the motel and the man next door, Savvy stumbles on a plot to swindle land from the residents of Barefoot Key. Devalued properties tumble like dominoes until Savvy musters her colorful crew from The Gull Motel to make the pillagers walk the plank.

Amie Denman lives in a small town in her native Ohio with her husband and sons. Her two cats and large yellow labrador are kind enough to share a sunny office where she lets her imagination run wild. Welcome to my first ever Author Spotlight post! :) I am very happy to introduce L.A. Cadieux to all of you, lovelies! She is the author of the newly released young adult novel, One Life.

P.S. Don't forget to enter the giveaway at the end of this post :)

Author Spotlight - One Life Tour @ My Book and My Coffee

Author of One Life - L.A. Cadieux
Connect with L.A.: Website | Blog | Goodreads | Twitter | Facebook | Pinterest | Google+

Keeping busy isn’t a problem for L. A. Cadieux as she balances a hectic life as a mom of two, plus her career as an IT project manager and newly published author—but she wouldn’t have it any other way.

As a child known for struggling with spelling, she wouldn’t have guessed her passion would become writing—her family would have probably hedged their bets she would take after her grandmother and turn a painting/drawing hobby into something special. But becoming a painter wasn’t to be, not when L. A. had the soul of a storyteller lurking inside…waiting to make a grand entrance when the time was right. Always a bit of a dreamer, she liked to imagine the grand adventures she’d have one day—all while growing up happily as the middle child of three girls on a farm in northeastern Alberta, Canada. Deep down, she had a thirst to see the world and obtain a higher education.

L. A. Cadieux didn’t start to write until in her early twenties after graduating from with a Bachelors of Management, specializing in Business Economics. She moved to Calgary and a couple years later set a personal goal to be published before 30. She turns 31 in September. With the release of her debut novel ONE LIFE, Cadieux reminds readers that with hard work and a never say can’t attitude, you really can achieve any dream. Her debut novel ONE LIFE released June 20, 2014.

Her second manuscript was inspired by popular children’s stories like The Secret Garden & Bridge to Terabitha. ONE LIFE is a paranormal adventure/romance story about sixteen year-old Teddy Owens and her ability to save one person from death – Teddy was lovingly named after the Theodore “Laurie” Laurence character in Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. With a mix of romance and action, this story wants to grab you from the first sentence and hold on until the end.

When it came to succeeding with her writing, L. A. Cadieux took the rough and winding road but she believes it’s hard to appreciate success without knowing what it feels like to have failed. She believes any low point in her journey was important for creative growth – though it was difficult to appreciate the value in those moments after receiving yet another rejection. She is thankful this chapter of her life had a happy ending.

L. A. Cadieux is a social media-aholic born in Lac La Biche, AB living in Calgary, Canada. Since childhood, she was mesmerized by stories of fairy tales, knights, Greek and Roman mythology and comic book heroes. Creative, yet business minded, she went on to earn a Degree in Management from the University of Alberta Augustana, specializing in Business Economics.  She is a Project Manager by day (in IT) and by night works on her stories. After shelving some of her earlier manuscripts she decided to focus on ONE LIFE, the first in a series of Teddy Owens Stories.  As a proud mom of two – she spends her days and nights multi-tasking.

Random facts: Tim Hortons coffee and ketchup chips are her vices. She is a fan of the HBO and CW Networks. Her favorite book is Jane Austen’s PRIDE & PREJUDICE.

With each new revelation, Teddy is thrust further into a clandestine underworld where she is hunted for her dormant supernatural power…the ability to save just one person from death.

After her family's sordid history of betrayal is unearthed, Teddy’s world is rocked when she must travel to New York City and take an oath promising her power to an arrogant heir of the underworld, Leevi Koivu. Can she trust him?

A Native’s Tongue by Michael D. Dennis
Release Date: June 2014
As I walked out under the Los Angeles sky, the possibility of becoming something more than a short order cook, living in the valley, and resenting my dysfunctional family occurred to me…

Charlie Winters has never been an overachiever. He is used to just getting by while living with his single mother and working a dead-end job at a cheesesteak stand. Meanwhile, he’s constantly grappling with the voice of his sister, who died in a tragic car accident years earlier, echoing in his head.

So when Violet, an older woman, sets her sights on Charlie and refuses to let go, he follows along. He soon finds himself immersed in a destructive relationship that still fails to fill the void within him.

But then he meets Jennifer, a mystical young woman whose energy and life convinces Charlie to pursue her, even through the darkest corners of Los Angeles, and sets their lives upon a path that can’t be stopped.

Escaping to the California coast, Charlie and Jennifer finally find what they’ve always needed. But a sudden illness quickly pulls them both back to LA.

It is there, amid the sex, drugs, and split-second decisions that pulse through the city, that tragedy strikes—threatening to tear Charlie and Jennifer apart forever.

Kerri Nelson is on blog tour this week to support her newly released cozy mystery novel, Remote Consequences. It's a celebration! :) She's here today to share a guest post about being a working stiff. Let's check it out!

P.S. Don't forget to enter the giveaway below. :)

Remote Consequences Blog Tour - Guest Post

****
In my new Working Stiff Mystery Series, main character Mandy Murrin starts out being a cable girl for Flicks Vision.  But this won’t be her forever job.  As the series progresses, she’ll find herself in a number of “blue collar” jobs (or as Mandy fears, blue cover-all jobs).

When I was writing this book, it got me to thinking about some of my own multitude of jobs that I’ve had over the years.  Back in high school, I was a grocery store cashier, a waitress, a journalist for my local paper (the high school correspondent, of course), and a babysitter.  In college, I was a retail clerk for a music store, a secretary, an emergency room receptionist, and then a nanny and a personal chef for a family.

Some of these jobs were fun, others frightening, and others still simply an opportunity to learn valuable lessons.  Or, as my dad would call it, “life experience”.  But mostly, they were all a way for me to earn much needed money while pursuing my education and my social life (gas money, anyone?).

I guess, even after I entered my professional career in the legal field, I still felt like a working stiff at times—mostly because I’d always dreamed of being a writer.  Now that the dream is becoming a reality, I feel like a very lucky working stiff.

Maybe there will always be a bit of working stiff in us.  Cause even when we retire, we are still working.  But, hopefully then we are working at living instead of working for a living.

And that’s something to strive for anyway.  What are some of the “working stiff” jobs you’ve had?

What is your “dream job” and what have you done to pursue it?

Cozy Mystery

Med school drop-out Mandy Murrin has returned home to care for her mentally handicapped, teenage sister. But despite having multiple college degrees under her belt, Mandy finds jobs aren't easy to come by in small town Alabama. Now instead of a stethoscope, she's forced to sport a tool belt as a technician for the local cable company, Flicks Vision.

But things go from bad to worse when, while on assignment at the Mayor's house, Mandy finds herself in the attic amongst cobwebs, Christmas decorations, and...a corpse? Suddenly Mandy's life is turned upside down with one missing body, a high school nemesis turned police detective, a mysterious stranger, and a town full of long buried secrets. If Mandy's not careful, this could be one dead end job where she may not make it out alive!
Definitely lovin' that cover! As you know, I'm a cozy mystery lover so this really makes me happy! :)

Because I Said So: Life in the Mom Zone by Annie Oeth
Non Fiction, Humor, Parenting
Release Date: April 2014

“But whyyyy?”

“Because I said so.”

It’s the answer that rolls off the tongues of mamas from all over. In Because I Said So, veteran mama Annie Oeth tells of the worries, laughter and sheer terror of being a mother. Trips to the emergency room, college graduations and the dangerous combination of teenagers and fireworks are all fair game in this romp through southern motherhood. Spilling the (jelly)beans on Easter egg hunts, Santa Claus and frogs in mailboxes, Annie Oeth writes of life, love and raising children while hanging on to her sense of humor.

From stories of laughter to tales of tears shed, she remembers her own growing-up years in small-town Mississippi, her parents’ 44-year romance and her own children’s travels on their way to adulthood, crafting stories that will touch hearts and funny bones.

Anyone who’s ever rocked a baby, worried over a teenager or seen family game night degenerate into a knock-down, drag-out can relate to these life lessons, straight from The Mom Zone.

Mamas are tender-hearted, but don’t mistake their kindness for an absence of backbone. In these stories, the love, strength, humor and super powers of mothers are hailed for the wonders that they are. Whether you’re a mama to sons who have an affection for reptiles and bottle rockets or a daughter who thinks you’re wrong just when you’ve figured out your own mother was right, you’ll love yourself, your kids and your life more after this read.

“Why?”
“Because I Said So.”

A lifelong Mississippian, Annie Oeth is a graduate of Mississippi University for Women. She currently works as a features editor for The Clarion-Ledger, the state’s largest daily newspaper.
