Emerald Bound by Teresa Richards
Amazon Kindle | Paperback

A princess, a pea, and a tower of mattresses. This is the sliver that survives of a story more nightmare than fairytale...

Maggie Rhodes, high school junior and semi-reformed stalker, learns the tale’s true roots after a spying attempt goes awry and her best friend Kate ends up as the victim of an ancient curse. At the center of the curse lies an enchanted emerald that has been residing quietly in a museum for the past fifty years. Admirers of the gem have no idea that it feeds on life. Or that it’s found its next victim in Kate.

Enter Lindy, a school acquaintance who knows more than she’s letting on, and Garon, a handsome stranger claiming he knows how to help, and Maggie is left wondering who to trust and how to save her best friend before it’s too late.

If only Maggie knew her connection to the fairy tale was rooted far deeper than an endangered best friend.

Monday LOVE!

I'm so happy to be back with everything - reading, reviewing, posting spotlights, and of course, them giveaways! Enter this giveaway for a chance to win a Kindle or paperback copy - (US Only) - of The Commons: Book 1: The Journeyman by Michael Alan Peck.

The Commons: Book 1: The Journeyman by Michael Alan Peck
Kindle | Paperback

“Paul Reid died in the snow at seventeen. The day of his death, he told a lie—and for the rest of his life, he wondered if that was what killed him.”

And so begins the battle for the afterlife, known as The Commons. It’s been taken over by a corporate raider who uses the energy of its souls to maintain his brutal control. The result is an imaginary landscape of a broken America—stuck in time and overrun by the heroes, monsters, dreams, and nightmares of the imprisoned dead.

Three people board a bus to nowhere: a New York street kid, an Iraq War veteran, and her five-year-old special-needs son. After a horrific accident, they are the last, best hope for The Commons to free itself. Along for the ride are a shotgun-toting goth girl, a six-foot-six mummy, a mute Shaolin monk with anger-management issues, and the only guide left to lead them.

Three Journeys: separate but joined. One mission: to save forever.

But first they have to save themselves.

About the Author:

Michael Alan Peck tells tales big and small. Life's magical, but it isn't always enough for a good story. So he makes up the rest.

He’s made his living writing about TV, its celebrities, and its past. He’s also put food on the table reviewing restaurants and writing about travel.

He has a godawful memory, so he focuses on the written word. He likes to think that over time, he’s gotten better at it—the writing, not the remembering. He forgets important dates. He’s pretty good with movie lines. But after several years, he tends to tweak them. He prefers his versions over the real ones.
Funny goes a long way with him. Probably further than it should.

He grew up outside Philadelphia and has lived in New York, L.A., and San Francisco. His current home base is Chicago.

Sasha lives in mountainous West Virginia with her husband, Tim, and their two daughters, Aeliza and Ava. She is currently hard at work on her next novel.

Lovely Thursday to all of you! Today, David Rawding (author of Taking on Water) is here @ My Book and My Coffee blog to talk about "Similes". Pretty exciting stuff! He is currently on tour to support his mystery/thriller novel, Taking on Water, and I'm very happy to be a part of it. Read on.

*****

I’ve been reading Raymond Chandler lately. He has a pulpy style with a noir edge that I absolutely relish. The next time you’re in a reading slump I suggest picking up a novel from Raymond Chandler. I believe he is the master of the simile. Similes, in case the high school English lessons wore off, are basically when a writer writes something and then compares it to something else. Similes can usually be spotted after “like” or “as” and they are literary tools to describe something with rich detail.

Here’s a Chandler simile that fills a canvas. “A few locks of dry white hair clung to his scalp, like wildflowers fighting for life on a bare rock.” (Chandler, Raymond, The Big Sleep. Vintage Crime/Black Lizard. Print.) I mean, I don’t know about you, but when I read a simile like that I instantly smile and say to myself, “Oh, you clever dog, Chandler. Bravo.” And that’s just on page 8! Keep reading and you’ll see his liberal use of the simile throughout The Big Sleep. I usually have to read his similes several times over to get full appreciation.

Similes certainly take some thought and I don’t even think a master like Chandler got them 100% right on his first attempt, but that’s where the Creative part of Creative Writing comes into play. That’s the fun part. Or, if you can’t get your simile to ever liftoff, then I suppose that is the most agonizing part. It would depend on the writer and the day.

It’s a good thing when a writer can get a reader to smile. It’s an amazing thing when a writer can get a reader to feel anything, really. That’s the goal. Our job is to get the reader to feel something; to grip that e-reader or book cover so hard that they leave sweat behind. Think about how powerful that is. A writer’s medium is words. Words mean nothing until they are read. Once read, some writers manage to cause an emotional response in their reader. And that’s what we’re selling. Writers sell words that we pray you’ll read. Not only just read, we go further and aspire to hope you’ll read our words in a way where we can cause your brain to feel. Writing is no small feat, but interesting to say the least.

So... I decided to read Book Two of the Selection Novel - The Elite.

The Elite by Kiera Cass

In America Singer’s world, a bride is chosen for the prince through an elaborate, televised competition. In The Elite, America is one of only six girls left in the running. But is it Prince Maxon—and life as the queen—that she wants? Or is it Aspen, her first love?

The Elite delivers the adventure, glamour, political intrigue, and romance that readers of The Selection expect, and continues the love triangle that captivated them.

I have high hopes for this one. How about you? What book are you reading right now? :)

Chocolate Shoes and Wedding Blues ~ Book Review

Entertaining. Lovely. Heart-warming, indeed. – Ara of My Book and My Coffee

This book talks about Tansy Poole, a thirty-something children’s books author living with her fiancé (for almost 6 years). She lives in London but her heart is really in Sticklepond, a village in West Lancashire. When she inherited an old shoe shop owned by her Aunt Nancy in Sticklepond, everything seemed to have fallen in the right place – give or take a step. :D

I loved reading this book. It has a lot of details but I appreciated every single thing. It may seem slow because of all those details but I love it anyway. I love the humor, romance, mystery and many more. Also the food. OMG. I feel like I gained a few pounds just by reading this novel. :D :D :D I also appreciate the exclusive recipes at the end of the book.

I like Tansy – she has a good heart and the Cinderella tale plot (yes, two wicked stepsisters) was definitely something you’ll need to read about. Especially Rae, one of the stepsisters. She’s one nasty character. Actually, Marcia, the other stepsister, is no better. Justin, Tansy’s fiancé, is one of those characters that you won’t really care about. It’s like “You did that and you expect this?” LOL. Maybe the character was written this way but I can already tell (because of the very long engagement) that he is not the one for Tansy. That someone out there will be better. When and who are two important questions. Ivo Hawksley, the actor and owner of the cottage next to the shoe shop, is something you’ll have to get to know more though. Coz I bet you’ll like him once you get to know this character.

Overall, I love it. If you love chick lit and contemporary romance novels then I definitely recommend reading this book. It’s one world you’d want to be a part of. You know how it is for us readers. :)

4.5 stars

Thank you for reading!

Glad to be included in Pamela Gibson's virtual book tour! Today, I'm featuring her contemporary romance novel, A Touch of Chardonnay (Love in Wine Country Book 2). Check it out and learn more about it. It could be the next book to add on your TBR. I know I probably would! Also, don't forget to enter the awesome giveaway below!

Here's the book cover:

A Touch of Chardonnay by Pamela Gibson

Cultural archeologist Lindsay Reynoso is in a small seaside town in California to evaluate an old mansion. When the home's owner shows up to “help” the evaluation along, Lindsay is furious. Especially as the owner is former bad-boy tennis star Christopher Brandt…her one-time fling and the father of Lindsay's son. Only he doesn't know it.

As far as Chris is concerned, the old mansion is tied to a past he's better off leaving behind. He'd rather bulldoze the thing and move on. If only his gorgeous consultant would let him. Even while fighting over the demolition, the chemistry that once brought them together is smoldering stronger than ever.

But honesty is very important to Chris, and Lindsay has an eight-year-old secret…

About the Author:

Pamela Gibson began making up stories as a small child, using her grandmother’s perfume bottles and spools of thread to create worlds for her characters. Growing up in San Juan Capistrano, California, she found a new source of story ideas while wandering through the ruins of the old Franciscan Mission in the center of town. It motivated her to write many history books under the name Pamela Hallan-Gibson before turning to her favorite genre…romance.

Now she writes on a 32-foot Nordic Tug, a trawler called Sea Bear. Married to a man who has adopted the cruising lifestyle, they live aboard almost full time, getting off to fly home to the wine country for holidays and special family occasions. The Sonoma and Napa Valleys are her favorite settings, full of stories waiting to be told. But there will be others that will take her (this year) from Mobile, Al. to the East Coast, to the Great Lakes, and down the rivers of Middle America back to the Gulf.

Pamela is the mother of two, grandmother to a yellow lab, three rescue cats, a lizard and a fish. She has a bachelor’s degree in history, a master’s in public administration, and was lucky enough to win or final in twelve contests while honing her craft. Her debut novel, A Kiss of Cabernet, was a finalist for best first book in Desert Rose RWA’s 2015 Golden Quill Contest.

She’s addicted to chocolate, white sand beaches, and all the trappings of Christmas. She loves to hear from readers.

Book Description: The Selection

The Selection by Kiera Cass

Amazon: Paperback | Kindle version | Hardcover

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself—and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

The Selection Book Review

I would love to just bottle some of the moments in this book because they are so romantic. One of the books you need to read if you want to believe in love again, and be reminded of how wonderful it really is to find happiness whatever the situation presents. – Ara of My Book and My Coffee

Welcome to America Singer’s life. Her life is pretty much laid out to her since birth. This is for everyone in Illéa, actually. She is living in a land where numbers are important. Numbers that dictate what people can or cannot have. And sadly, these numbers also dictate who a person can or cannot love.

Then, America became one of the Selected. The chance in a lifetime every girl dreams of. This is a chance to live in a palace and hopefully win Prince Maxon’s heart.

But America is not ‘every girl’.

She is pretty happy with her secret love, Aspen. She just wants to be herself and continue the life she knows. As a Selected, she has to leave home and compete for something that she doesn’t really want – be the Princess of Illéa / win Prince Maxon’s heart.

The book is so well written; it described everything so perfectly that at one point, I had to put the book down (just for a moment) because I was melting and needed time to take the sweetness overload I’d just read. This book has those moments and as I’ve mentioned above, I would love to bottle them and just keep them with me at all times.

I love the story so much. It is so colorful. Yes, so many things going on there but the writing is powerful that you can’t really get lost as a reader.

The characters were definitely written perfectly. I love America’s character and I can understand the struggle she’s going through. I understand the situation that she’s in. I just hope she realizes what she wants before … no. I just hope she realizes what she wants. Period. And fast. Prince Maxon – I’m in-love with this character. Crazy, I know. But I am. As to Aspen, I don’t know what to tell you about this guy. I liked him at first but not anymore. Marlee, one of the Selected girls, is also interesting. I wonder what is behind that giddy and enthusiastic façade. I just hope it’s not pure evil. I like her now but I have a feeling that there’s something we, the readers, are not seeing. Or maybe it’s just me and trust issues. LOL.

So here’s the part where I choose sides. I really am hoping that the end of this will be America marrying Prince Maxon. The Selection is Book 1 and I can’t wait to read Book Two, The Elite. I don’t know what will happen yet. I was careful not to read comments for the other books. But I really, really hope that America will end up with Prince Maxon. That he will be loyal and faithful to her. I mean, come on. Prince Maxon is just soooo adorable and loving. And if I was America, I’d fight for him. Yes, he is a character but I am IN-LOVE with this guy already. LOL. I don’t care about Aspen. At first, America and Aspen were cute and the ‘against all odds’ thing they have going on was kind of romantic. I’ve been there. But what he did wasn’t right. And I’m sure he has his reasons for doing such a thing, and I respect that. But I think the story wasn’t created for him and her. This love story is really for Prince Maxon and America – it’s destiny. It should be. I am rooting for these two! Team Maxon all the way! I mean, come on now. It’s gotta be Team Maxon.

Title: Grace Unexpected
Author: Gale Martin
Romantic Comedy
Form: Kindle eBook

Book Description: Grace Unexpected

Grace Unexpected by Gale Martin

Grace Unexpected by Gale Martin
Kindle version| Paperback

Thirty-something Grace Savage has slogged through crummy jobs and dead-end relationships with men who would rather go bald than say “I do”. In search of respite from her current job, she visits Shaker Village in New Hampshire. Instead of renewal, she’s unnerved to learn that Shaker men and women lived and worked side by side in complete celibacy.

When her longtime boyfriend dumps her instead of proposing, Grace avows the sexless Shaker ways. Resolved to stick to her new plan – dubbed the Shaker Plan – despite ovaries ticking like time bombs, she returns to her life in Pennsylvania. Almost immediately, she's juggling two eligible bachelors: Addison, a young beat reporter; and True, a venerable anthropology professor. Both men have ample charms and soul mate potential to test her newfound Shaker-style self-control, and Grace appears to be on the fast track to a marriage proposal… until secrets revealed deliver a death rattle to the Shaker Plan.

Grace Unexpected Book Review

A great read. The ending was unexpected. I don’t know how it will work out but, all in all, the whole story is incredible and shows a different level of understanding when it comes to the word ‘love’. – Ara of My Book and My Coffee

Grace Unexpected is a story about Grace Savage, a woman who thought she’d get a proposal from her longtime boyfriend, Christian, on her 35th birthday. Oh well, let’s just say that it was a mistake, that Grace should have seen this coming instead. But if you ask me, ‘Good riddance to bad rubbish’.

Before this birthday fiasco, Grace and her sister-in-law went on a vacation; they went to Shaker Village in New Hampshire. This Shaker-village-experience led her to learn how men and women of that village lived: in complete celibacy. After what happened on her birthday, she decided to declare a plan that will let her concentrate more on work – the Shaker plan, giving up sex unless it’s with a man she has a commitment with. A noble plan, I must say.

The next events weren’t so easy for Grace especially when it seemed like this plan attracted two of the most adorable bachelors in the planet – Addison and True. :)

The story, overall, is very interesting. I remember feeling really happy and excited for Grace when she and Addison were together. And I had the same feeling when Grace was with True. The story is very modern, you know. I mean, from where I came from, you cannot date two guys at once. It’s frowned upon, not really illegal. You can entertain multiple suitors but then it’s really up to you if you want to ‘date’ one of them. I feel old sharing this with you. HAHA. But I understand what Grace went through in this story. She wanted to explore and decide from there. What her heart will tell her after getting to know the two, etc. The problem was she liked them both and could not decide. I felt the ‘sparks’ between her and Addison. I felt how enchanted she was with True, and how he True-ly adored and cared for her. So will she go with the one with ‘sparks’ or the enchanting one? I tried to put my self in her shoes and I, too, could not decide.

The story is never a bore because aside from her dating life, Grace will also experience some office madness that may or may not be a good thing for her career and, overall, her life.

Characters in the story: Special mention to Goody. He is one of my favorites. You’ll encounter a McDisaster character here and she’s one to lookout for; she’s a real piece of work. And of course, I like Grace. She’s funny and intelligent. Maybe not so much when it comes to dating. LOL. There’s a big ‘OMG’ there. You’ll have to find out for yourself.

One let down here is the ending. I’m not completely happy about how the story ended. Yes, it is a happy ending because of what happened to Grace but ‘question marks’ are floating in my head. Like, why? And how will it work out? And it’s like I need one more chapter before this ending so I can understand why this has to happen and with this person. I guess I needed more to feel the sweet and happy ending as it's intended to be.

Hello lovelies!

Finally back! Changed my theme, fixed issues here and there. Although I have other things I want to add here and there, too! Anyway, to start this joyful celebration (me being back and all), I'll start this sort of bookish meme. There's no linkup because I can't find a free link up tool for now. Can't exactly afford any additional tools but maybe next time.

So, what am I reading at the moment?

Grace Unexpected by Gale Martin

So far, I'm enjoying this one! Will post my review in a few days. :)

So, how about you? What are you reading at the moment? Please let me know in the comments. Thanks!

Hi dear book readers and friends!

I didn't want to admit it at first. I didn't want to go on hiatus but I had to. So that's what happened here. I wasn't able to blog for almost a year because time wasn't really my friend. And I was sad because of that. Knowing that I won't be able to post anything on my blog or visit my friends here. I love reading and blogging, and not being able to them is just depressing.

But now, I'm really back! I changed my theme as you can see and I'm not yet done with the edits. Just a few more! I'll start posting my usual stuff and hope to see you guys here! Happy blogging!
