Title: Dead Run
Author: Erica Spindler
Mystery & Suspense
Form: Hardcover

Book Description: Dead Run

Dead Run by Erica Spindler
Paperback | Hardcover | Kindle edition

"I'm in trouble, Liz. I've uncovered something.… They're watching.…"

That panicked message on her answering machine is the last time Liz Ames hears from her sister Rachel, pastor of Paradise Christian Church in Key West, Florida.

Compelled to uncover the truth about her sister's disappearance, she heads to Key West. Within hours of her arrival a successful banker jumps to his death. Then a teenage girl whom Rachel was counseling is found brutally murdered. The ritualistic style of the killing is hauntingly similar to that used by the notorious "New Testament" serial killer—now on death row.

Could the teen's murder be related to Rachel's disappearance? Is a copycat killer at work? And why do the police refuse to help?

For answers, Liz turns to Rick Wells, a former Miami cop who worked the fringes of the "New Testament" investigation. Together they peel away layers of deception to reveal a terrifying adversary—and the unspeakable evil at the heart of this island paradise.

Dead Run ~ Book Review

This is a wonderful read, truly. Erica Spindler is one of my favorite authors. Great ending for this story and I couldn’t ask for more. – Ara of My Book and My Coffee

A pastor missing. A sister ready to know what really happened. An ex-cop with a quintessential Key West bar. And the Paradise of Christian Church in Key West. These are the only things you need to know to get really interested with this book.

I love the characters except for the ‘nasty’ ones – although they are very effective. Especially the two nasty ones that you will discover in the last few chapters. I love that the author was able to surprise me with these two.

Liz Ames is the sister, ready to know what really happened. After her sister went missing, no leads but some BS thing that the police came up with, she decided to move to Key West and try and prove what she’s been feeling – that her sister didn’t have a breakdown and just ran off. Not her sister, the most stable person she knows.

Aside from the above aspect of the story, there will be other storylines that will prove to be connected to what / who Liz is looking for.

There’s also a romantic path here so be ready to feel a lot of emotions.

The ending is sweet and just right. I couldn’t have asked for more.

Thanks for reading!

Title: Always the Baker, Never the Bride
Author: Sandra D. Bricker
Contemporary Romance
Form: Kindle edition

Book Description: Always the Baker, Never the Bride

Always the Baker, Never the Bride by Sandra D. Bricker
Paperback | Hardcover | Kindle edition

They say you can’t have your cake and eat it too. But who would want a cake they couldn’t eat?Just ask Emma Rae Travis about that. A baker of confections who is diabetic and can’t enjoy them. When Emma meets Jackson Drake, the escapee from Corporate America who is starting a wedding destination hotel to fulfill a dream that belonged to someone else, this twosome and their crazy family ties bring new meaning to the term "family circus." The Atlanta social scene will never be the same.

Always the Baker, Never the Bride ~ Book Review

I love the recipes - just delicious! Unique set of characters. The story is alright, simple and entertaining in a way. – Ara of My Book and My Coffee

Welcome to Emma Rae Travis’ world. Emma Rae is a diabetic master baker. Yes. It’s a bit sad, right? But you know, it’s also inspiring.

Jackson Drake is an interesting ex-Corporate guy who’s starting a wedding destination hotel.  The ‘craziness’ begins right after their worlds meet.

The story, as I’ve mentioned above, is just alright. It’s wonderful in its own way and I find it to be entertaining. There were a few scenarios where I got confused but after re-reading, I did get what was happening or who said what.

[Spoiler Alert] When Emma Rae started working for Jackson, I knew already that it will start something special. And it eventually did. But since Jackson is still undergoing something painful, their ‘something special’ had to wait for a little bit. One of the things that I can say I’m not that thrilled of is how the story kind of took a long time to head to the direction it should be going. Maybe because of how the story was created but I feel like it could have been better. For me, the story got really exciting when that ‘something special’ finally started between the two main characters.

This book has a unique set of characters and I appreciated them all. Of course, my favorite character is Emma Rae, our main character, because she did inspire me. I am not diabetic but what her character does is just inspiring. Imagine this: You’re a baker. Oh wait, not just a baker, an award-winning baker and yet you’re diabetic. So you cannot really have cake and eat it, too. Maybe just a taste though. A tiny bite. It’s just cruel, right? But this character proved that it doesn’t matter. If you’re passionate enough with something, do it. Even though you cannot really enjoy the outcome. That’s inspiring… and brave, don’t you think?

Jackson’s character is also quite lovely. He is lucky to have his sisters and Emma. Jackson’s sisters are also entertaining. I can almost hear their accent and I love, love it! I also like Fee’s character because she's unique and dependable.

There’s a wedding at the end so I’ll leave you to guess.

Whose wedding is it? You’ll have to find out for yourself. :)

Thanks for reading!

The rumor at school is that after the varsity quarterback broke her heart, Evelyn Hernandez broke his hand. Then she demolished his car, beat up his girlfriend, and smashed all the windows in his house—or so the story goes. Some say that under the long hair and blunt cut bangs, beneath the cute dresses and colorful tights, and behind the pretty face and big brown eyes … hides a black-hearted, spell-casting, evil witch.

Only Evelyn doesn’t care what people at school say, or think. She couldn’t be happier. Her bullies have been brought to justice, her parents trust her, and she has a boyfriend who adores her. She’s even returned to drawing in her journal … but that’s when the nightmares begin.

Evelyn believes her violent dreams are messages from the future. Something terrible is going to happen at her school and only she can stop it—but how, and at what price?

Title: Divergent
Author: Veronica Roth
Science Fiction, Dystopian
Form: Paperback

Book Description: Divergent

Divergent by Veronica Roth
Paperback | Hardcover | Kindle edition

One choice can transform you. Beatrice Prior's society is divided into five factions—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). Beatrice must choose between staying with her Abnegation family and transferring factions. Her choice will shock her community and herself. But the newly christened Tris also has a secret, one she's determined to keep hidden, because in this world, what makes you different makes you dangerous.

Divergent ~ Book Review

*Spoilers*

I really like the storyline. It’s a different world, yes, but the writer made it easy for her readers to fully understand what’s happening (that’s a good thing). Divergent is a really good book to read - especially if you like dystopian novels. One of my favorites now! – Ara of My Book and My Coffee

So, here I am at 2:53 am in the morning, writing this book review. Such a good read. FYI – I didn’t watch the movie. Yet. I didn’t want to because I really wanted to read the book first.

Divergent’s story is about a world where society is divided into factions. Five factions, different behaviors. They have a Choosing Ceremony once a year and this is when all 16-year-olds have to select their faction. A huge decision. Even adults, in real life, will have a hard time to choose. Beatrice Prior is a 16-year-old girl from the Abnegation faction. And yes, she has to choose if she wants to stay or transfer to another faction.

“One choice can transform you.” This tagline can be seen from the cover of the book, too. This is one of the things that make Divergent relatable in a way. In real life, one choice can really change you. Right? For Beatrice, however, it will definitely change her life. Before the Choosing Ceremony, these sixteen-year-olds have to take an aptitude test that will show which of the five factions they belong in. Sounds interesting. Beatrice knows this and it’s a big deal. What if the test showed that she belongs to another faction? What if it showed that she’s really for Abnegation?  Choosing another faction means leaving your family behind. “Faction before blood”. After reading the first chapter, however, I had a feeling that she will choose another faction. If you’re about to read Divergent after this, I’m sure you’ll see what I mean.

Once you’ve chosen a faction, there will be initiation. The faction she chose has a  highly competitive initiation. And if you don’t compete, you’ll be dismissed and will be factionless. And that’s a whole another world you wouldn’t want our main character to be in.

I know there’s a ‘spoilers’ sign on top of the review but I don’t want to tell you everything because I want you to have fun reading this book. As a reader, you deserve to be surprised. And amazed. And stunned. Stunned is exactly how I will describe myself right now. Like I can’t believe that all of those things happened.

Let’s talk about the characters.

Beatrice / Tris: Her character is incredible. She appears weak but as Four (one of the characters you will love for sure) mentioned, fear doesn’t shut her up; it wakes her up. And it’s very apparent once you discover how she takes on all things new to her. She’s ‘human’, you know. In real life, and this is one of the things that made her character relatable, Beatrice could easily be one of us at one point because she can easily adapt, she knows the right from wrong and acts according to what she think is right at the time. She’s courageous, brave, but not ruthless. Not ruthless. Yea, I’ll say that. But she did something that I know will haunt her as long as it can. If you know what it is, let’s tweet about it. LOL I’ll tell you on Twitter, too, if you ask me.

Four: Omg. I have so much to say about this character but I have to stop myself. :) Others may find him scary but if he likes you, you will like him, too. He is not fearless but he’s learned how to control his fear. Or at least, learning how to react towards his fear. For me, he is brave and compassionate. I would love to know more about him.

Christina and Will: Great friends of Tris. One will end up dead and the other one unknown. At least in this book.

Al: Oh, Al. Why, oh, why. I liked him at first but he got messed up. Really messed up.

Caleb: Beatrice’s brother who also took the aptitude test and will choose a faction. Another faction? You’ll find out when you read the book. :)

Beatrice’s Parents: They are great parents. I kind of hoped that what happened to them in the story is all a part of a simulation. That it isn’t real. In fact, at one point, I kinda hoped that the major bad thing that happened in the story is just a huge simulation and that Beatrice can wake up at any minute.

Peter, Molly and Drew: These three. Ugh. I’m surprised that Peter may still be a character in Book 2.

This book has a lot of surprises, twists and turns. The major bad thing that I mentioned earlier? It’s really awful and that’s why while reading that part, I hoped that Beatrice will just wake up and it will be all a dream or a simulation of some sort to test her abilities. Anyway, it’s not. I can tell you that.

All in all, I recommend that you read this book because the rave reviews are true. The story is unforgettable. It is unique in its own way; I really, really liked it. The writing is really easy to understand and follow so as a reader, you will actually know what a certain character must have felt like during a certain scenario (for example).

The ending? Honestly, I wasn’t able to formulate how the story will end right away, and was quite a bit shocked, stunned, really, at the events that took place before it reached that last paragraph at the end of the book. Bittersweet, I would say. I like that Beatrice is starting to embrace what she really is and what she can become.

But whenever she sees Aspen standing guard around the palace, she is overcome with memories of the life they planned to share. With the group narrowed down to the Elite, the other girls are even more determined to win Maxon over—and time is running out for America to decide.

The Elite ~ Book Review

*Spoiler alert*

Book Two of The Selection Novel, The Elite, is like a messy patch. Lots of realizations and these warranted different emotions. All in all, a really good read. Very imaginative. – Ara of My Book and My Coffee

The Elite is Book 2 of The Selection Series. You can read my review of the first book here – The Selection Book Review. For me, Book Two is soooo much different from the first one. I’m just saying that as a reader, and since I was careful not to read reviews about The Elite, I was kind of hoping that I’ll read more about Prince Maxon’s sweetness overload, that America will be able to actually say out loud who she really wants to be with, and that everything will be alright in that department. But oh no, oh no. Oh. No.

I found myself really annoyed at America’s character more than a few times while reading the book. But that is because of the indecisiveness. I know the whole situation is out of the ordinary and given her beliefs, it mustn’t be easy. And yes, choosing who she wants to be with for the rest of her life is probably challenging because of the options she has. But you know, she wants to be treated fairly but she is not ‘playing’ that way at all. For me, she needs to decide. I know, again, it’s not that easy and it may not be simple but a decision has to be made in these circumstances. And since I’m Team Maxon all the way, she needs to end things with Aspen already. If she wants to choose Aspen, she should just let Maxon be happy with someone who will actually love him.

This book showed a little more about who Maxon really is. He is, in fact, just human. With flaws and all that. But even with these flaws, he’s still wonderful. And I’m not saying this because I found his character to be really ‘dreamy’ when I read the first book. To me, he is still the one for America. Like all relationships, communication is key. I mean, they kind of have a relationship already, and they can communicate if they want. They just need to always remember that they can work things out.

Anyhow, I’m glad that Maxon still want him after what happened. America’s bravery, although ill-timed, should count for something.

“There’s a light at the end of the tunnel.” That’s what the ending felt like to me. There’s hope! And I’m very much excited to see what will happen next. I can only imagine that Book 3 will be more interesting than ever. Can’t wait to read it!

There's a new book in town - take a look!

Passion, Poison, and Puppy Dogs

Book Spotlight: Passion, Poison, & Puppy Dogs

Passion, Poison, & Puppy Dogs by Sally S. Smith & Jean Steffens

When Lizzie Jones, pet sitter extraordinaire, is asked to watch over her best friend's two spoiled dogs at the posh gated community of Craggy Hill Estates, the last things she expects is to wind up in the middle of a homicide. But that's exactly what happens when she finds her best friend's cheating husband and Danger Cove’s celebrity bodybuilder champ, Mr. Jupiter, floating facedown in his hot tub. To make matters worse, the police aren’t looking any further than the wife for a suspect—isn’t it always the wife? Well, not in this case—at least Lizzie refuses to believe it.

Between dealing with Craggy Hill's hot security guard, Tino Morales—who also just happens to be the man who broke Lizzie’s heart in high school, caring for her grieving friend, and watching three rambunctious dogs, Lizzie has her hands full. So she recruits her famous granddad, retired network field correspondent, Jimmy John Jones, to help her put two and two together to find the real killer. Was Mr. Jupiter murdered by one of his women on the side? A jealous, disgruntled employee? Or someone with a bitter and deep-seated hatred of the superstar? It's up to Lizzie, Jimmy John, and Lizzie's own pug, Vader, to crack the case before the killer claims another victim...this one much closer to Lizzie’s own heart!
About the Authors:

The international best-selling writing team of Sally J. Smith (right brain) and Jean Steffens (left brain) make up equal halves of one totally functional writer’s mind. Creative and intuitive and organized and systematic? What could be better than that? The two desert dwellers work together side-by-side, literally finishing each other’s sentences, putting together their novels faster and more efficiently than they ever could individually.

When their heads aren’t together over a manuscript, you’ll find them with their families, at a movie, the yoga studio, the mall, or out-to-lunch—in the food sense, not the spaced-out sense, well…most of the time. Their current series include Jordan Welsh & Eddie Marino Novels, Mystic Isle Mysteries, Danger Cove Pet Sitter Mysteries, and coming soon, Aloha Lagoon Gabby LeClair Mysteries, and Digby Sloan Mysteries.
