Title: Dead Run
Author: Erica Spindler
Mystery & Suspense
Form: Hardcover

Book Description: Dead Run

Dead Run by Erica Spindler
Paperback | Hardcover | Kindle edition

"I'm in trouble, Liz. I've uncovered something.… They're watching.…"

That panicked message on her answering machine is the last time Liz Ames hears from her sister Rachel, pastor of Paradise Christian Church in Key West, Florida.

Compelled to uncover the truth about her sister's disappearance, she heads to Key West. Within hours of her arrival a successful banker jumps to his death. Then a teenage girl whom Rachel was counseling is found brutally murdered. The ritualistic style of the killing is hauntingly similar to that used by the notorious "New Testament" serial killer—now on death row.

Could the teen's murder be related to Rachel's disappearance? Is a copycat killer at work? And why do the police refuse to help?

For answers, Liz turns to Rick Wells, a former Miami cop who worked the fringes of the "New Testament" investigation. Together they peel away layers of deception to reveal a terrifying adversary—and the unspeakable evil at the heart of this island paradise.

Dead Run ~ Book Review

This is a wonderful read, truly. Erica Spindler is one of my favorite authors. Great ending for this story and I couldn’t ask for more. – Ara of My Book and My Coffee

A pastor missing. A sister ready to know what really happened. An ex-cop with a quintessential Key West bar. And the Paradise of Christian Church in Key West. These are the only things you need to know to get really interested with this book.

I love the characters except for the ‘nasty’ ones – although they are very effective. Especially the two nasty ones that you will discover in the last few chapters. I love that the author was able to surprise me with these two.

Liz Ames is the sister, ready to know what really happened. After her sister went missing, no leads but some BS thing that the police came up with, she decided to move to Key West and try and prove what she’s been feeling – that her sister didn’t have a breakdown and just ran off. Not her sister, the most stable person she knows.

Aside from the above aspect of the story, there will be other storylines that will prove to be connected to what / who Liz is looking for.

There’s also a romantic path here so be ready to feel a lot of emotions.

The ending is sweet and just right. I couldn’t have asked for more.

Thanks for reading!

Mystery
Release Date: April 2014
Kindle version | Paperback

A teenager returns home from school to find a gruesome scene: the apartment he shares with his mother, Shao Mei, in Boston’s Chinatown has been ransacked and she is dead. There is a bottle of Moutai—the most exotic and expensive Chinese liquor—left at the scene and traces of rat poison in one of the two shot glasses on the kitchen counter. This was evidently a homicide, but who could possibly be the killer?

Ann Lee and Fang Chen, close friends of the victim, team up with the Boston police to solve this mystifying crime: why would anyone want to murder a harmless middle-aged woman, one who worked as an unassuming mailroom clerk, with no money, no connections, and presumably, no enemies?

Realizing that important clues behind the motive may be buried deep in the victim’s past, they travel to Beijing, where Shao Mei spent more than fifty years of her life. While there, surrounded by the antiquities of China’s rich and complex history, they stumble unwittingly into a cobweb of mystery and danger. Fearing for their lives but determined to press on, they end up unearthing a scandal more deceptive and far-reaching than either could have imagined.

Disclosure: The three main characters and the victim also appeared in The Mystery of Revenge by G.X. Chen.

My Book and My Coffee welcomes Chrinda Jones, author of Darkness Knows Me, a mystery novel. Check out her guest post today about book promotions.

Darkness Knows Me
Chrinda Jones
Mystery
Release date: April 1st, 2013
Tour: Irresistible Reads Book Tours

I’ll Scratch Your Back, If You’ll Scratch Mine, or you scratch my back and I'll most definitely think about scratching yours - possibly, maybe . . .

Recently I've started looking at businesses and organizations designed to help independent authors promote their books. Some of these business/organizations are fee based and others completely free. (If you're like me - free has a lovely ring to it and certainly gets my attention)

FEE based promotions offer packages designed to fit any author's budget, from Daddy Warbucks to Old Lady in the Shoe. Clearly the more frugal packages are going to be pretty bare-boned compared to the higher priced options. Less time will be scheduled for promotion, less avenues will be sought for promotion, less time and help will be given to managing your promotion. . . you get the picture. Like anything else in this world, fee based promotion has its problems. Most fee based promotion companies are on the up-and-up, and provide a decent product/service. Others will take their tiny fee for their promotion package and honor just enough of their contract to keep them out of trouble. Others will promise much for the money you pay and produce terrible product and promote just enough to keep you handing over more money, until you’ve paid for more than you’ve gotten. The old adages ‘you can’t get something for nothing’ and ‘if it’s too good to be true, it isn’t.’ should be heeded when dealing with the cheap and not so cheap promotion deals.

Fine print is not your friend with these companies, so read before you sign your book away. Many of these promotion companies will try to lay claim to your book rights once you sign with them, which mean they could try to dictate nearly every aspect of publishing, printing and promoting your work. I’ve read horror stories from fellow authors who are still struggling to get there books back.

FREE promotions sites (I love the sound of this particular 'f' word) are free just like they say. There's usually no charge to join, no hidden fees once you start promoting and they don't take a hunk of your book profits. The only cost is your time, your lists of social media contacts and your willingness to follow directions.

These sites are usually always set-up by other authors for the purpose of promoting themselves as well as other authors who want to hop the bandwagon and share their social media connections in pursuit of mutually promoting their works.

This is self-promotion at nearly its most primitive. These groups use a weekly or bi-monthly (usually a genre focused push) of participating author's works, with a rotation of featured novels during the same genre promotion.

However, like anything else, you have to go in with your eyes open. Since joining two of these free sites, I have learned a few things right out of the chute, which I will share with you, free of charge.

First: The 'I'll scratch your back, if you'll scratch mine' thing only works if the other person is willing to do some scratching. Don't go into this thinking everyone shares the mindset of being helpful. Many people who join these sites have no intention of participating or using their contacts to help anyone but themselves. Plan on being a scratcher.

Second: Don't get sucked into the 'I'll read and review your book, if you'll read and review mine' cycle. It's only helpful if the person asking for your review has some social media clout or access to places you don't. Otherwise you're caught in a cycle of buying from and selling to authors, which defeats the purpose of joining.

Third: Be protective of your social media sites and followers, because desperate people will spam the be-jibbers out of your sites if you give them access, which could cost you contacts.

I can't say I've seen much in the way of new sales generation from the sites I've joined, but then it's only been a few weeks. I figure a little more time will tell the tale.

Cheers!
Chrinda Jones

More about the book, Darkness Knows Me:
Richard McMann hangs by his arms from the rafters of Red Curtain Club- naked. His ankles are bound together and his throat is cut in what appears to be a gruesome still-life tribute to Christ’s crucifixion. There is no blood in spite of the gaping wound to his throat and his entire body is covered by what looks like a fine white powder. The salt granules scattered on the dance floor beneath his feet and the fact that his body faces due east, make his murder different yet similar to the death days earlier in a club a few blocks away.

South Dallas police detective, Olivia Gates and criminal psychologist, Dr. Will Green, engage in a game of wits with a serial killer who haunts the nightclubs of Deep Ellum, leaving behind ritualistic sacrifices of those people he believes deserving of the act. Is he a raging psychopath, killing just to kill, or is there method behind his madness?

Happy Friday, my dear readers. :) Today, let's all welcome Elizabeth Buhmann, author of Lay Death at Her Door. She has prepared a guest post about writing a mystery novel. Read on ...and be sure to check out the giveaway at the end of the post. :) Have fun!

I love a really good mystery! There is almost nothing I would rather read.

What I like is the discovery of a hidden reality—dark and terrible—that underlies appearance. And there is satisfaction in seeing evildoers dragged out in the open and brought to justice.

When you set out to write a mystery novel, you invent not one, but two stories. One of them is about a secret. For example, one person might be jealous of another. He quarrels with her, kills her, conceals the body, concocts an alibi, etc. That’s what really happens, but it’s hidden. No one knows about it.

When I write a mystery, I start with this kind of story—the story of a crime. I write out a detailed synopsis of the action, which culminates in murder and includes the killer’s effort to conceal what he’s done. This is the unknown that has to be discovered, the injustice that needs to be set right.

This underlying story could almost be a novel in itself, but it wouldn’t be a mystery. It would be a drama—a tragedy, perhaps. The mystery is a second story—about how the first story comes to be known.

The actual plot of the mystery begins with the first public sign of a violent reality that’s hidden beneath a placid surface. Shots are heard, or someone disappears, or—classically—a body is found.

The plot, then, is a chain of events inexorably leading from that first sign to a full exposure of the hidden story. Only then can justice be restored.

In many mysteries, the first inkling of the hidden story leads to a detective being hired or police being called to a crime scene. My book, Lay Death at Her Door, departs from this formula, but it still has the heart of a mystery. It’s all about the laying bare of a hidden story.

My main character Kate once got herself into a situation which led to a man getting shot and Kate being beaten and raped. To protect herself, Kate lied on the stand, and an innocent man went to prison.

So in my book, the eruption of violence—the murder and the rape—was initially explained away by a false solution. The wrong man took the blame. The first inkling of reality in Lay Death at Her Door comes twenty years after the fact (in chapter one), when the innocent man is exonerated by new evidence.

In another departure from the usual structure of a mystery novel, I chose a main character in the hidden drama as my protagonist. More often, the protagonist is a detective who solves the crime.

I wanted to tell the story from the inside, even though it meant my main character would be a dark one, morally complicit, however unwillingly, in the real killer’s crimes.

Like most mysteries, Lay Death at Her Door is ultimately about justice. In Kate’s story, there was a very real possibility that the truth would never be revealed. What breaks the case is Kate herself. Her own character is her downfall. And this to me is a compelling idea—that justice comes down from within.

She is lying.

Kate would like nothing better than to turn her back on the past, but she is trapped in a stand-off with the real killer. When a body turns up on her doorstep, she resorts to desperate measures to free herself once and for all from a secret that is ruining her life.

Title: The Hour of Predators (A Marcus Chao Mystery)
Author: Lane Stark
Genre: Mystery
Form: Kindle edition

Book Description ~ The Hour of Predators (A Marcus Chao Mystery)

Book Review: The Hour of Predators by Lane Stark
Amazon: The Hour of Predators Kindle edition
Amazon: The Hour of Predators Paperback

“It was the hour of prowling bears, circling nightowls, vengeful spirits, and savage hearts. It was the hour of predators.”

Two murders have shocked and divided the Canadian community of Bella Coola, a small, isolated village in a remote river valley on the coast of British Columbia. The evidence points to a teenaged Nuxalk boy, and the simmering tension between whites and tribe members heats up. To find the truth RCMP Inspector Marcus Chao must sort through misleading clues, cultural conflicts, tangled relationships, sexual scandals, and even indications that the crimes might have been committed by a sorcerer.

Marcus is a man whose life has skidded into remorse and misery. His own infidelity has ended his marriage to the woman he still loves, and now he finds himself with only two things to keep his sinking spirits afloat: the need to serve justice and his eternal fascination with solving the mystery of the crime. This latest puzzle, however, is proving to be a maze of intrigue and suspense, and his mettle as a detective as well as his principles will be tested.

The Hour of Predators Book Review

“Well-written mystery. An extraordinary mystery novel that will definitely keep you at the edge of your seat. Well done. I am thankful that I don’t live in Bella Coola though. :) – Ara of My Book and My Coffee

The Hour of Predators is a unique story; a unique mystery novel that I think is really well-written. The plot is unbelievably brilliant. I mean, if you’re into mystery novels, you’ll indubitably love this book, too. I’m sure of that. It’ll keep you guessing. While I was reading the book, I couldn’t help but try to solve the puzzle myself. Who was responsible for those murders? I mean, that’s the whole mystery there. Who has been murdering those people? And why? How? And why was it so easy? Anyway, I didn’t really have an idea. If you’ve read the book description above, indeed, there were misleading clues which made the whole thing complicated - but the complications made the whole mystery so effective. And that’s a really good thing. The author did a really good job. It is so brilliant and utterly refreshing.

In this book, I was introduced to a different kind of culture. This culture and the conflicts that came with it added ‘spice’ to the whole story. Aside from the murder mystery, you’ll also be introduced to the different and sometimes surprising news or facts from the people living there. Small village but again, I wouldn’t want to live there, in Bella Coola. You’ll know what I mean.

I didn’t have a favorite character though. It’s weird. I mean, I liked Marcus Chao, the inspector and also the protagonist, but I felt that I needed more WOW factor from him... or something like that. Maybe it's just me and maybe it doesn't matter at all. He has his moments, of course. I liked his way of solving the mystery. He is thorough, that’s for sure. But I just thought that there should be more from him (or maybe I'm asking too much?). :) I also liked Gemma’s character, the inspector’s wife. But I didn’t care about their relationship at all. No spark there. But that’s alright as that was not the focus there.

Claire is one of the important characters in the book. I felt sorry for Claire’s character; she is so beautiful and yet … Oh, well. She’s intelligent but with tainted innocence. Oh, poor Claire. The rest of the characters are also important. More important than you would think, actually.

I didn’t expect the ending to be that way though. I liked the ending, don’t get me wrong. You must think I’m over analyzing. But I wanted something to happen before the story ended - to one of the characters (I won’t say who as it will give away something). I just thought that things could have been easier for him (or her) if certain facts were explained to him (or her). So that person can go on with his/her life without the nightmare from his or her past. That’s all I can say. I may not make sense to you now, but you’ll know what I mean once you read the book. :)

I would definitely recommend this book, The Hour of Predators. It’s a mystery novel, but far from the usual. I don’t want to give any more details as I’m afraid I would be giving out spoilers already. But lovelies, you will love this book especially if you’re a mystery lover.

Lane Stark has had three enduring passions through her life: travel, art, and the written word. She has traveled the world, lived abroad in both Europe and Asia, and experienced many cultures. She holds a B.A. and M.A. in linguistics, has studied eight languages, and recently ended a career as a graphic artist. She has now turned her creative attentions to full-time writing and leisure-time photography. Travel provides a wealth of inspiration for books, and she finds herself weaving tales around the people she meets and the places she explores. She and her husband have indulged their love of the vagabond life by moving into an RV full-time and following the roadways to new adventures. She is currently working on a second novel featuring RCMP Inspector Marcus Chao, A Premature Death.
